Open and click tracking

Open and click tracking you can turn on per message

In short

Sendpository can record opens and link clicks for each message and report them as webhooks and in the dashboard. Tracking is off by default and chosen per message, so password resets and receipts stay untracked.

Opt in per message

track_opens and track_clicks on the send, or an account default.

Machine opens filtered

Mail-scanner and proxy fetches are separated from real opens where they can be detected.

Unsubscribe handled

One-click List-Unsubscribe headers for marketing mail, a {{unsubscribe_url}} link for the body, automatic suppression and an email.unsubscribed webhook.

How opens and clicks are measured, and what they are worth

An open is a one-pixel image fetched from a tracking URL, and a click is a redirect through one. Both are off by default and both are per-message, so you can track a marketing send and leave a password reset alone - which is the right split, because a reset email has nothing to learn from and a tracked link in one looks like phishing.

Open rates have been unreliable since Apple's Mail Privacy Protection began pre-fetching images for every message, whether or not a human looked at it. Treat opens as a weak upper bound, not a measurement. Clicks still mean a person acted.

What tracking costs you

A tracked link is rewritten to a redirect, so the URL a recipient sees is not your domain. That costs a little trust, occasionally trips a filter, and breaks when a security scanner pre-fetches every link in the message - which registers as a click nobody made.

Nothing is tracked without the flag being set on that message, and the recipient's IP and user agent recorded against an open or click belong to them rather than to you. They are part of the delivery log and are deleted on the log's own retention schedule.

Questions

Should I track opens on transactional email?

Usually not. Security scanners open links in password-reset mail, and tracking adds nothing a delivery log doesn't already tell you. Use it on product and marketing email.
